Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance, according to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“There’s no single standard treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED),” said Dr. John H. Dole, MD, assistant professor of medicine and medical oncology at Harvard Medical School and lead author of a study that examined a group of drugs that have been approved by the FDA for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
While drugs such as Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra are approved for the treatment of ED, some drugs, such as sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and avanafil (Avanafil), have not been studied and need to be taken in conjunction with an ED drug, said Dr. Dole. “We’re trying to understand exactly how these drugs work in patients, what they do, and how they could interact with each other.”
According to the report, there have been three trials involving patients with ED treated with drugs for the treatment of ED that included sildenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil, as well as other ED medications, including phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5i).
The drugs that did not have a low incidence of adverse events (AEs) and/or interactions with PDE5i have been studied as well.
The FDA has approved several medications to treat ED, including the drug sildenafil (sold under the brand name Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and avanafil (Avanafil). These drugs work by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow, and facilitating an erection when sexually stimulated.
The study, “Viagra, tadalafil, and avanafil,” is one of the most rigorous clinical trials for the treatment of ED, which took place in the United States between February 2002 and April 2004.
The drugs work by inhibiting an enzyme called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) that breaks down certain chemicals called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the body.
PDE5i, or PDE5i, is the main ingredient in Viagra and Cialis. It works by relaxing blood vessels in the penis, increasing blood flow, and facilitating an erection when sexually stimulated.
“These drugs are approved to treat erectile dysfunction, and these drugs are used to treat ED,” said Dr.

“We have evaluated the safety and efficacy of this drug for patients who are taking these drugs,” Dr. Dole said.
“The most common side effects associated with sildenafil, tadalafil, and avanafil are headache, flushing, nasal congestion, nasal congestion, nasal polyps, and back pain, among other side effects,” he added.
The FDA approved Viagra for use in men over the age of 40 and for use in men suffering from erectile dysfunction, but the drug has not been approved for use in women.
